Coals To Newcastle: a route based in the early 1960s and includes the "Short" North section of the Main Northern main line to Sydney, part of the North Coast line to Gloucester, Enfield and Darling Harbour Goods Yard, South Maitland Railway (to Pelton) and the Richmond Vale Railway. It also holds rolling stock and activities to support this fine route.

The Victorian Railways' X Class Booster Handbook (ca. 1930)

The Victorian Railways Rolling Stock Branch produced this booklet in the 1930s as an instruction manual for the C2-type booster fitted to X Class steam locomotives. A booster was also fitted to N class N110, but it differed in detail only so the manual would have applied to N110 as much as the Xs.

Tweaks, Updates and Patches

1.    Setting Up team-ALCO Steam Locomotive Consists.

Many of the team-ALCO steam engines use an extra "Crew" Engine file in locomotive consists to provide extra effects and correct spacing for the locomotive consist.

I'm going to walk you through setting up a typical steam locomotive-hauled train consist using both Conbuilder and MSTS's own Consist Editor to show you how to create your own consists.

2.    Improving the Quality Of Sounds.

When MSTS was first created back in 2001, the game was set up to use 40 3D sound buffers and 20 2D sound buffers. However, all sound cards or chipsets have in excess of 200 3D & 2D hardware buffers. You will note an improvement in the sounds on your MSTS installation with a small change to your "soundcfg.dat" file.

Browse to your MSTS\Global folder. Find and make a backup of the Soundcfg.dat file.

soundcfg.dat file

Open the file in ConTEXT or similar Unicode-aware editor and scroll down to line 39. The line will look like this:

soundcfg.dat file

Change this line so that it reads
SoundSystem ( 5, 200, 20, 31457280 ), like this:

soundcfg.dat file

Save the file and restart MSTS.

This modification was discovered and first published by Stuart Williamson, creator of some of MSTS' best add-on sound systems.

Thought For The Day

"If the past has taught us anything it is that every cause brings its effect, every action has a consequence.

"We Chinese have a saying: "If a man plants melons, he will reap melons; if he sows beans, he will reap beans." And this is true of every man's life: good begets good, and evil leads to evil.

"True enough, the sun shines on the saint and the sinner alike, and too often it seems that the wicked wax and prosper. But we can say with certitude that, with the individual as with the nation, the flourishing of the wicked is an illusion, for, unceasingly, life keeps books on us all.

"In the end, we are all the sum total of our actions. Character cannot be counterfeited, nor can it be put on and cast off as if it were a garment to meet the whim of the moment. Like the markings on wood which are ingrained in the very heart of the tree, character requires time and nurture for growth and development. In the end, all 19 Are we the sum total 20 of our actions.

"Thus also, day by day,we write our own destiny, for inexorably we become what we do. This, I believe, is the supreme logic and the law of life.
